IVC filters can cause severe medical problems

| Nov 23, 2018 | Medical Product Liability

One medical problem that has plagued doctors and hospitals for decades is what to do about blood clots. Blood clots can form in the body for a number of reasons, and they are a particular problem when a patient has recently had surgery and is then not doing a lot of moving around while recovering.

Particularly if it gets in to one’s vital organs, a blood clot can have a devastating or even deadly medical result. Not surprisingly, therefore, doctors make every reasonable effort they can to prevent them or reduce the threat.

Unfortunately, not every effort to prevent blood clotting has turned out as many probably had hoped. Take, for example, the case of so-called IVC filters. These devices were designed to intercept blood clots and break them down before the entered a vital system. Surgeons would implant them in to patients hoping the device would save their patients’ lives.

However, as time has gone on, there have been more and more reports of very serious complications arising from IVC filters that seem to make them hardly worth the trouble. For example, these devices have been connected with bleeding around the heart, breathing problems and infections, as well as cases of chronic and severe pain.

Artery blockage in the lungs and other major and potentially fatal medical conditions have also been tied to the use of these devices. These and other issues seem to be fairly common, as the federal government has received well over 1,500 bad reports about this product.

As part of its medical product liability practice, our law office is prepared to handle the cases of victims both in Rome, Georgia, and other locations with any legal claims they may have with respect to IVC filters or other defective medical devices.
