Blood sugar drug has potentially disastrous side effects

On Behalf of | Dec 14, 2018 | Medical Product Liability

There are many people in Georgia who suffer from high blood sugar to the point where they need to take medication for this condition.

While there are many quality products out there, it seems that, sadly, at least one of these medicines, Invokana, may be doing more harm than good with respect to patients who need to keep their glucose levels in check.

Although the active ingredient in the drug is approved for treating low blood sugar levels in Type 2 diabetics, there have been over 100 lawsuits across the country on account of various side effects that patients are tying to Invokana.

These side effects include otherwise unexplained kidney problems, stroke, the need for one to have their legs or feet amputated and diabetic ketoacidosis, which is a serious and potentially fatal medical problem diabetics face when their blood sugar levels get too high.

While of course this drug comes with warnings and the like, many are realizing that these warnings were inadequate to the task of giving patients a full appreciation of what the risks of taking Invokana are. For many, however, this realization that the drug is more dangerous than one might suppose comes too late.

Whether approved by federal regulators or not, the manufacturer of this drug had a responsibility to market it only if it were safe for patients and patients were fully informed about any residual risk. Those who have suffered injuries because of this drug therefore may have the right to seek compensation from the manufacturer for their losses. As an experienced medical product liability firm in Rome, we can help Georgia victims of Invokana get the compensation they deserve.
